This is a prepared text of the Commencement address delivered by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, on June 12, 2005.

I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.

The first story is about connecting the dots.

I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?

It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?" They said: "Of course." My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.

And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.

It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:

Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating.

None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, it's likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.

Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

My second story is about love and loss.

I was lucky — I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation — the Macintosh — a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.

I really didn't know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me — I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.

I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I returned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple's current renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.

I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle.

My third story is about death.

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn't even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor's code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you'd have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.

I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I'm fine now.

This was the closest I've been to facing death, and I hope it's the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:

No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960's, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.

Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish." It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.

我的朋友，华南师大教授，才华横溢、青年才俊的刘良华博士曾有一句名言：一个有着强大偏见的人，才是真正有思想的人。这句话，在他的学生中有着广泛的影响力。如果，把“强大偏见”看成是有自己独特深刻见解，且有很执着的追求与坚守的精神的意思，是一种错得深刻，而不是对得肤浅，我以为是很有道理的。人客观意义上说，每个人的见解都可以是一种偏见。因为，没有人能够把这个世界的一切完整地纳入自己的视野，每个人只能够从自己的立场，自己的知识结构与经验视野中获得一点自己的理解与见识。但是，这句话也容易让人误解，以为偏见就是好的，而且越是偏见越好。其实，一个人的偏见是带有强烈的主观情绪的。那往往是缺乏理性，缺乏宽容的结果，而且是非理性的情绪化，常常容易扩大这种偏见。

因此，我更喜欢说：一个内心强大的人，才是真正有思想的人。内心强大，表明他对这个世界，对社会，对人生，已经有了一整套比较完整的看法。在佛教那里就是“无漏”之说，已然成熟于胸。内心强大的人，不必要色厉内荏，外强中干，甚至可能外表懦弱，但是，内心坚强。内心强大的人，一定是有自己坚定信念的人，这种信念不是口头上的，而是发自内心深处的。也不仅仅是在知识上的，而且是带有深厚情感，有着丰富的人生阅历，以及广阔的视野，这种内心的强大，常常意味着他极其地自信，而这种自信常常就来自于他深刻地意识到自己的浅薄，因此他有一种特别的开放意识与开放心态，对于任何不同的声音，他都能够认真听进去，能够用自己的头脑再想一想，对自己自信的东西仍然保持一份警惕。因此，他不会拒绝去听一听，想一想不同的声音。但是，由于他的内心的强大，他也不会一听到不同的声音就焦虑不安，就立即改变自己的想法，而且是在不同的声音面前，学会用逻辑、常识、常理、直觉、经验及科学的方法再重新检验一次。而事实上，这样的检验不会是第一次，而是反复多次，而且成为一种常态。反复多次，成为常态，仍然得到坚守，之后的东西才是稳固的。内心里，真正稳固的东西多了，他就强大了。因此，内心强大的人并不是不再改变，而是不再需要改变自己处于信念内核中的东西。

一个人信念中内核的东西，如果经常被改变，那么，他的心灵世界还是无形的，他的精神世界还是迷茫与混沌一片，这样的人，即使著书立说，也是今天这样说，明天那样说，立场不坚定，逻辑不一贯，对自己想要什么，自己想过怎样的生活，毫无主见。

信念内核究竟是什么？就是你的世界观、人生观与价值观。你怎样看待这个世界，你怎样认识人生，你怎样看待幸福与意义，这些东西在一个内心强大的人那里是完全圆通自洽的。这里没有什么正确与错误，但是，一定是自洽的。在这里，你的思想信念与你的生命感受，生活经验，你的知识结构，你的理性认识，你在社会中担当的角色，不会在逻辑上，在生活经验与理性认识中产生冲突与分裂。不会言不由衷，不会所做的事与所说的话互相矛盾。一个人如果到这个地步，也就是人格完善，内心强大之人了。

内心强大的人，也就是真正有思想的人；或者说真正有思想的人，也是内心强大的人。这样的人，即使身处世俗世界里的所谓逆境，他的内心也是平和的，自信的，且是充满快乐的。因为，他的世界不再只是世俗世界，他还有自己独有的完美的内心世界，在这个世界里，他有自己的幸福标准与快乐标准，在这个王国里，他享受着别人无法享受，也无法理解的幸福与快乐。近二百年前丹麦思想家戈尔凯廓尔一生一贫如洗，生命也很短暂，但是，他内心强大，一生充满快乐。这样的人的幸福，是一般人所难以理解的。内心强大的人，其实是精神贵族。他意识到人，作为一种有精灵的人，有思想的人，其肉体生命的有限性，同时也意识到思想生命的无限性。他知道怎样摆正的自己肉体生命与自己的思想世界之间的关系，也能够认识到世俗世界的物质标准与自己精神世界的另类坐标。因此，内心强大的人不失眠，不焦虑，不急躁，随时随地作人生中最坏的打算，往最好处追求。一切灾难与痛苦，都早在他的生命中思量过了，甚至丰富真切地体验过了。他向死而生，因此，一切的变故都不再让他感觉世界突然被颠倒，人生会被变得面目全非，一种坚定的信念，可以支持到他安然入土，与世长辞。

他的生命不再焦急地等待，而是坚定地行动，他的行动标准是内在的，而不是外在的。不以物喜，不以已悲，宠辱不惊，淡然处之。他相信人生中任何经验，包括那些不幸所带来的感受，都将化成他人生中独特的体验。而这些经验都将化成他的思想智慧，成为他内心更为强大的材料。他相信，人的肉体是这个宇宙中最为脆弱的东西之一，但是，他的精神世界却可以坚不可摧。他还相信，在这个世界，他的生命感受是唯一的，没有人可以替代。这是他充满自信的力量来源。生命的觉醒，使得他爱人如已，先认真爱护好自己，然后用自己光辉灿烂的生命去感召这个社会。爱人如已，如果一个人，把自己打理很糟糕，内心很混乱，心灵很脆弱，那么，他无疑就缺乏了爱的力量，一个糟糕的人即使爱人如已，也只会把别人弄得与自己一样糟糕。因此，他懂得珍惜自己生命中的每寸时光。也因此，内心强大的人，他有自己的生活主题与生命意义。在生命意义上，他坚信，天上地下，唯我独尊。并且相信每一个人的生命都有这个权利，他自尊，更懂得尊重别人，他追求幸福，更懂得尊重他人的幸福，他作出选择，更懂得尊重他人的选择。

有思想的人，并不一定就是有原创思想的人，那些接受来的思想，只要与他的生命与生活产生了强烈的共鸣，那种思想也将使他内心变得强大，思想与人的生命性是密不可分的。有思想，就是意味他用自己作为人的生命开始思考，用自己生命感受开始体验生活，感受世界，不以人的毁誉而判定自己的价值与意义，不活在别人的眼光里。即使全国的人以他为敌，即使全世界的人误解了他，孤立了他，他也能够淡然而坚定地生活。在这个时候，“那个最孤独的人，就是世界上最有力量的人”，易卜生的这个话表明，内心强大的人，在真理与真相面前，他就是敢于成为国民之敌的人，成为千夫所指的人，也就是真正有思想的人，这样的人的内心世界就到了强大之极的地步。这样的人无论在什么时代，什么国度，都将是极少数的一个群体。但是，一点可以肯定的事实就是，这样的人在一个多元、开放、平等、自由的社会里，将更有生存的土壤。而且这样的人也不再会成为国民之敌，也不容易成为孤峰，他不必要用“道不行，乘桴浮于海”作为自己的出路，尽管他也可能孤独，但是孤独在这里是一种幸福，是一种享受。内心强大的人，思想丰富的人，他不在乎有多少人误解了他，也不在乎有多少世俗的偏见，因为他的内心就是一个完美的世界，一个人内心的丰富，足以弥补一些物质的匮乏。内心强大的人，就是真正有思想的人，而真正有思想的人，也必然是内心强大的人。

這是梁繼璋寫給兒子的信；但看後，我覺得不只給兒子，其實可以適合所有人看!

我兒:
寫這備忘錄給你，基於三個原則：

(一）人生福禍無常，誰也不知可以活多久，有些事情還是早一點說好
(二）我是你的父親，我不跟你說，沒有人會跟你說
(三）這備忘錄裏記載的，都是我經過慘痛失敗得回來的體驗，可以為你的成長省回不少冤枉路。

以下，便是你在人生中要好好記住的事：
1.對你不好的人，你不要太介意:在你一生中，沒有人有義務要對你好，除了我和你媽媽。至於那些對你好的人，你除了要珍惜、感恩外，也請多防備一點，因為，每個人做每件事，總有一個原因，他對你好，未必真的是因為喜歡你，請你必須搞清楚，而不必太快將對方看作真朋友

2.沒有人是不可代替，沒有東西是必須擁有:看透了這一點，將來你身邊的人不再要你，或許失去了世間上最愛的一切時，也應該明白，這並不是甚麼大不了的事

3.生命是短暫的，今日你還在浪費著生命，明日會發覺生命已遠離你了:因此，愈早珍惜生命，你享受生命的日子也愈多，與其盼望長壽，倒不如早點享受

4.世界上並沒有最愛這回事:愛情只是一種霎時的感覺，而這感覺絕對會隨時日、心境而改變。如果你的所謂最愛離開你，請耐心地等候一下，讓時日慢慢沖洗，讓心靈慢慢沉澱，你的苦就會慢慢淡化。不要過分憧憬愛情的美，不要過分誇大失戀的悲

5.雖然，很多有成就的人士都有受過很多教育，但並不等如不用功讀書，就一定可以成功:你學到的知識，就是你擁有的武器!人，可以白手興家，但不可以手無寸鐵，緊記！

6.我不會要求你供養我下半輩子，同樣地我也不會供養你的下半輩子，當你長大到可以獨立的時候，我的責任已經完結:以後，你要坐巴士還是Benz，吃魚翅還是粉絲，都要自己負責

7.你可以要求自己守信，但不能要求別人守信，你可以要求自己對人好，但不能期待人家對你好:你怎樣對人，並不代表人家就會怎樣對你，如果看不透這一點，你只會徒添不必要的煩惱

8.我買了十多二十年六合彩，還是一窮二白，連三獎也沒有中，這證明人要發達，還是要努力工作才可以，世界上並沒有免費午餐

Just an experiential opinion.A reply I like to use when it concerns prices."You are absolutely right Prospect.Even I find that the price is not attractive enough sometimes.But I am sure you are someone who knows value in something when you see one right?*waits for prospect to nod his head*So,you do agree that this product has a value which you'll buy when we can agree on an attractive price right?*waits for prospect to agree*Why don't you share with me an attractive price you'll place on the value of this product,and I'll see if I can work out a deal for you."-Kia,I use this when it comes to my prospects who compare prices,or say that the premiums I propose are too high for them.Cause by this,I get them to psychologically commit to the value of the product,and then get their commitment of possible purchase,since it's a price they say they will put.Hope it helps a bit.

Hi brother, that's an interesting question. One that every salesperson has to learn to tackle. However, price will never be an issue if value is present. People buy the benefits and pleasure that the product is going to give them, not the product itself. If pleasure of owning the product is greater than the pain of parting with the money, customer WILL BUY. Good Luck!
